Business Times was founded in 1991 by Julie Barnes-Ward and Alan Spooner, who produced a 24-page monthly newspaper from a home office. It has grown and developed into what it is today – one of the most respected business publications in the region.

Through the good economic times – and the not so good – the focus of Business Times has always been to highlight the positive aspects of the business community, focusing on the optimism, hard work and drive that characterises Northamptonshire and its businesses.

Regular platforms for the financial, legal and property sectors are complemented by a focus on the towns and boroughs that all play their own, important part in the county’s economy, and on specific sectors that boast some of the best and most talented companies and individuals in the region.

With a growing and diverse customer base of more than 400 local Northamptonshire businesses, Technocopy decided in 2015 that it was time to branch out into the London market by creating a joint venture with an office products firm based in London. The success of this joint venture in its first year lead to another joint venture being started in June 2016 with a Northamptonshire based office supplies business.

Hard work and dedication to their customers, along with vast knowledge and expertise of the industry has meant that Technocopy has grown by over three hundred percent in four years and continues to look for new advancements and technologies to ensure that their customers continue to have the competitive edge when it comes to their print management.

SilverDisc is a digital agency with a track record of getting it right for our clients. We’re based in Kettering, Northamptonshire and our technology division is in Santiago, Chile. What sets us apart?

Our Age and Experience

We’ve been around for a long time, since before the Web and well before Google and Facebook. Founded in 1993 to develop marketing applications on compact disc (hence our name), we quickly got online. We were running our first web server in 1994 for our client, HarperCollins, and in 1995 we helped Barclays to develop the first online banking service. Later in 1995 we began search marketing with the launch of AltaVista. We began PPC marketing in 2001 and social media marketing in 2006. When it comes to the Web, we’ve been there, seen it, done it – we even have an original Google t-shirt.

Our Patents and Technology

We’re a marketing company, of course, but we’re a marketing company founded by technologists. This means we have a deep and broad understanding of the whole ecosystem in which our marketing is operating, including issues such as scalability, stability and security. It’s no good sending visitors to a website that is slow or has fallen over or been hacked.

In 1999 SilverDisc’s founder Alan Perkins filed two patents covering some very fundamental search engine ground, including crawling and indexing of the web and personalisation of search results – both still hot topics today. Both patents were granted (you can read them here and here) and have been successfully licensed. We continue to use their principles and processes in the systems and tools we run for our clients.

Our Ethics and Standards

In 2001 Alan was speaking at the Search Engine Strategies conference in San Francisco. The theme of the session was “cloaking and doorways” and he had travelled half way around the world, at his own expense, to spend twelve minutes telling the audience (who had themselves paid to travel and learn about cloaking and doorways) why they shouldn’t in fact use these unethical techniques. Frankly, he wondered what he was doing there! But in the audience were people from Google, who liked not only what Alan had to say but also how he said it, in a way that laid out long term principles rather than detailed technical guidelines. Google’s Head of Webspam, Matt Cutts, made contact with Alan and, as a result, two of Alan’s principles made their way into Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

I set up Aspectus Financial Consultancy in 2017 to specialise in Wealth Management and Financial Planning for SME Business Owners and Senior Management.

Over the last 20 years, I have been involved with business owners in many different forms, from seeing my father manage the family business, to working with commercial clients in the banking environment and helping with the challenges faced by both HR Managers and Finance Directors when working with Unum (a group insurance specialist). I find this fascinating, no two days are the same and just as one hurdle may be overcome, another is rarely far away.

I believe my past experiences in this area will really help provide the guidance which business owners are looking for which other professionals could be unable to offer. Business and personal planning are absolutely linked, and by looking at the plans and the strategy for the business, it means that we can really focus on how to get the most value for you.

So, what will I do to help you?

I’ll listen to you, I’ll look to understand where you are on the business journey – from start-up, through growth to expansion and maturity, and ultimately exit or business succession.

I will look to truly understand what your motivators are in your business and personal world, and by doing this we can:

  • build a plan for extracting the profits in the most efficient way
  • consider your exit and succession options
  • ensure you have risk mitigation plans
  • review employee benefits and look at wellness in the workplace.

Whilst I’m a local business, I have the support of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, a FTSE 100 company with £90.7bn of clients funds under management. I’m proud to be a part of their Entrepreneurs Club which, again, specialises in building bespoke solutions with third party providers to help businesses.

It offers tailored monthly publications relevant to your business stage, as well as the opportunity for a Business Insight Review by Elephants Child, a company set up by entrepreneurs to help businesses maximise their value – this provides great guidance from those that have been there and done it!

I hope we get the opportunity to meet because I’m confident you will find it beneficial.

The Partner Practice represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the Group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the Group’s
website at The ‘St. James’s Place Partnership’ and the titles ‘Partner’ and ‘Partner Practice’ are marketing terms used to describe St. James’s Place representatives.

We all use Google because we know, like and trust it to deliver the best results. Google makes its money by showing ads called AdWords or sponsored links. That’s what we do all day, every day and have done since 2007. We work with dozens of clients who know that Search, Display, Remarketing, Shopping, Mobile, YouTube and Gmail campaigns are key parts of their marketing strategy and outsource their campaign activity to us for efficiency and peace of mind. My Mustard clients also enjoy the benefits of LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pay per click advertising opportunities.

The recipe for My Mustard is pretty straightforward: Take eight professional women, two rather splendid young men, a joke-telling pig-rabbit, the world’s biggest search engine, some forward-thinking customers, and mix well. Add hours of number crunching, extensive market research, some seriously creative writing, a lot of patience, a bucketful of tenacity and a Bit of luck. Sprinkle with endless enthusiasm and serve hot.

“The winner is the chef who takes the same ingredients as everyone else and produces the best results.”

We work really hard and we are nice people to do business with. We realised on day one that we can only do well if our clients do well so we try to stay focused on their success at all times. We really like what we do and it shows…. and we always play to win.

Northampton Hope Centre;
Giving a Hand up, not a hand out…

·         Imagine falling asleep every night, in a doorway; in a tent or on the floor and having to brave the elements every hour of every day…

·         Imagine waking up in the morning and not knowing where your next meal was coming from…

·         Imagine not being able to afford clean clothes, not able to shower,  not able to make a cup of tea when you want it…

·         Imagine having to choose between eating or paying the rent / putting the heating on / getting your children their new school shoes…

That is the life many people in Northamptonshire are facing each and every day. Without The Hope Centre, individuals across our county would have nowhere to go, no support and no hope for the future.

Northampton Hope Centre is here to provide crisis support for those in need and also support to give individuals a better future. Whether that better future is being free from addiction, having a safe place to stay, getting help for mental health problems or gaining training to get back in to work, The Northampton Hope centre helps people each and every day to get nearer to that better future.

For more information please visit or call 0845 519 9371 and talk to Louise.

Peter has been part of The Hope Centre for over 20 years on and off. He first started using the centre when he was unemployed, and had split up from his partner.  In his words

‘I’d hit rock bottom, and was drinking and using drugs to block it out, I couldn’t get another job due to my drink and drug dependency, but I occasionally cleaned myself up and managed a bit of agency work in warehouses and as a kitchen porter. The Hope Centre offered me loads of support, they fed me, put clothes on my back and provided me the opportunity to get into some paid work.

Peter was one of 6 clients who took part in a week’s work experience programme at Coca Cola.  Since then he has gained employment as a cleaner within their warehouse.  He says It’s changed my whole life upside down and put me back on the map in the real world where I should have been. My family and friends especially my mum is proud of me for sticking at it and that I’m a hard worker. I never want to be unemployed again. Getting my first wage, knowing that I had worked hard for it and now I’m dependent on it’.

The Northamptonshire business community support the Northampton Hope Centre in many ways, helping us find placements for our service users wanting to return to work, using our catering services to provide buffets at their events, volunteering and fundraising.

Each year we have to raise over £½ Million to keep our work going. This is done entirely through charitable donations and grants. The support of the Northamptonshire community has enabled the charity to keep its doors open for over 40 years and the support of the SME business awards will enables the charity to let people know what we do, and offer lots of great ways businesses can support the charity and help Northamptonshire’s homeless.
